Truman once said: â€Å"Dictatorship, by whatever name, is founded on the doctrine that the individual amounts to nothing; that the State is the only one that counts; and that men and women and children were put on earth solely for the purpose of serving the state.† A dictatorship is a form of government in which a dictator, a single person or ruler who exercises absolute power and unrestricted control, monopolizes all aspects of political authority. Dictatorships typically terminate rather quickly compared to most other forms of government. This is due to the fact that dictatorships thrive on oppression, violence, aggression, and usually, mass genocide. Citizens under a dictatorship have their rights completely restricted and their freedom of speech undeniably taken away, because under a dictatorship, the individual citizen is forced to sacrifice all that he or she has for the sake of the state. Dictatorships demand complete obedience and will tolerate zero opposition because without it, a dictatorship will crumble. Dictatorships have been dated back to the Roman Empire, but they have been most prominent during the 19th and 20th centuries. In Europe, dictators such as Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler, and Stalin are prominent political figures during the 20th century.
